Reading Comprehension
Preschool Through Grade 3

Reading comprehension is the ability to understand what you are reading, and encompasses several different skills.

It is as important to reading mastery as being able to read words
on a page.

Unfortunately, many children suffer in this
area, and it can usually be traced back to
how proficient they are in decoding words.

The decoding process must be fast enough
so that a word and its meaning does not get lost
in the decoding of the next word.
When this happens the child never gets a chance
to understand what is going on in the text.

In a nutshell, reading comprehension is heavily
dependent on a child's complete mastery of
phonics and phonemic awareness.

(It's all just a vicious circle-but
happily attainable if parents do the
right things early and often-why do you
think I keep harping on it. :}

Remember, You won't go wrong- and will
actually be racing down the track to success by
reading
reading reading to your child.

This cannot be stressed enough
(all of the research states without a doubt-

that daily reading to your child and by your child
is imperative to ensure success in school
and life beyond,

...yet most parents do not do it.

The simplest way to achieve success for
your child is to get started NOW and commit
to keep it up forever!!

Get some
Usborne Books on subjects
that your child likes.

Usborne has done most of the work for
you-by creating books that automatically develop
and strengthen necessary skills, just by reading or
interacting with the books.
These books are the ones
 loved
by teachers, librarians and reading specialists,
and are the best ones created
 so far, that
are actually written to work with the way a
child's brain learns and retains information

(for boys, the busy-ness of the Puzzle Adventures,
which require interaction with the book-

really enhances comprension skills and are
favorites of LD teachers.)

Learning is then easier, more natural and
retention is almost assured.

Plus, the child falls in love with reading-which is
more than half the battle-
especially for boys-who
have a natural tendency towards reading problems.

Usborne Books have a high picture to word ratio-
and that is done on purpose.

  • A picture is worth a thousand words and since
our goal when we give a child a book is

         learning(fun),

         co
    mprehension(fun),
         retension(fun),

    - rather than just filling a page with hum drum
words going on and on- when a carefully
selected and created picture can convey
    the concept better-
    then it is obvious that
only an idiot, a withered old textbook writer
or a publisher who just throws out the latest
popular cartoon character to make a quick buck,
    would not use the picture.

And, yet that is what happens. Very few pictures
are used (and the ones that are, are usually chosen
with little imagination).  And when it comes to
younger children-photographs are used.  Which
is not as beneficial.

They are cheaper to create and process-
and yet, any professional that deals
with younger children knows- a young child's
brain does not see or process photographs the
same way that an adult does. Two
dimensional
drawings work better, and anyone who is publishing
books for them should be publishing books accordingly.
(unless-they are just in it for the money!...hmmmm-
can't imagine that happening, can you?

Usborne Books are used by educators
in many private schools and by
most home schooling parents- because
they are truly the best!

I know, I know, this sounds like a sales pitch- but I
really do not know any other way
of letting parents know just how

perfect these books are, in helping to
ensure your child's success.

-Whether your child is a toddler and just
starting on their road to reading

-a preschooler developing those
necessary pre reading skills,

-a early elementary child who could care
less about books, reading or school

-or even an advanced child who needs enrichment
to enhance their thirst for knowledge.

Usborne Books are the answer.

I found them years ago while searching desperately for an enrichment program for my very bright 8 year old son. He
was bored to tears in the regular classroom and getting into trouble since he finished his work quickly and had nothing
to do.  His teachers solution to enrichment was to give him
more work-which was simply saying-since you are smarter
than the other kids-let's give you more worksheets to do
~~He was not amused.

His energy, creativity and LOVE for school was getting choked out of him-(a trend that is very common in public schools-by
the way) and I was determined to do something about it.

My exhaustive and almost desperate search led to these
books and I was WOW'd by what I found.

Bar none-these books are...
