Free guide "Raise Smarter Kids by Raising a Reader"

Phonics, Phonology, Phonological Awareness, Phonemes,
& Phonemic Awareness

Good grief, the woman's gone "phone" crazy.

And you thought that "phone" was not going to be an issue, much less "The" major
issue of parenting, at least until your kids were alittle older, and then only to keep
them quiet while you were using it. Or, even later when you try to figure out how to
keep it from growing into the side of your 13 year old daughter's head because she
won't stay off of it!

Sorry to burst your naive happy little bubble, but listed above are some critical
"phones" that ALL parents should be instilling in their children-from toddlerhood
onwards.

Never heard of more than one of them? Doesn't matter.

Are they some new kind of gobbly-gook that is here today- gone tomorrow?
Nope. ...Sorry.

They are as old as reading the written word is, and every good reader has
mastered them, whether or not they knew that they had or what they were called.

"Ok, Kim. So, now you are telling me that on top of everything else I am
supposed to do, (and that my husband manages to get out of), I now have
to not only learn this-but spend time teaching it to my children? When exactly
am I supposed to sleep?"

What's a good parent to do?

Well, the answer is good news and (semi) bad news. Let me put your mind at
rest-at least a little.

The good news is-
"No, you do not have to take time to learn all about the 'phones'. Most parents
already know and expose
their children to them in the normal course of interacting
with them."

The (semi) bad news is- you do need to have a simple understanding and a strong
committment to doing a little more than what comes naturally to ensure that your
child is mastering them.

Pictured above right is a grouping of Usborne's phonics beginning
readers.  If you have a 3-6 year old, these books will either start the
phonemic awareness process or strengthen it.

then the rest of the books in the collection)

1. Phonics is merely a teaching method that emphasizes the sounds that go
    with each letter.

2. Phonetic reading involves "sounding out" words the way they are written,or writing
    words the way they sound.

3. Phonology is hearing the difference between different sounds when spoken aloud.
(and has nothing to do with letters of the alphabet).

4. Phonological awareness is a child's basic and over all understanding
that spoken words are made up of sounds.

5. Phoneme awareness refers to a child knowing that the building blocks of spoken
    words are the (sounds) phonemes.

Now, you can do research on this and study it, test yourself, drive your
child crazy attempting to teach it, frustrate yourself, alienate your child,
make your child hate books, learning, school and life itself OR, you can
just take the easy and Smarter way to make sure your child masters
all of this.

What would that be?? Well, if you are in the least bit familiar with me
or this website- you already KNOW the answer, so let's say it together.
Here we go, 1, 2, 3...

"READ to my child."

Good Job, Mom!   (you know that I am only kidding don't  you-ok,
not really-but I hope that I am not being too much of a smart alec!)

The following can NOT be emphasized enough:
1. Read to your child every day starting at birth- (making sure that you have
made it a daily habit by no later than 9 months.)

2. Read rhyming books.

All the time. Over and over. Especially out loud.
This is probably THE MOST important type of book of all, because just
by reading them aloud daily, your child is automatically-yet in a non-stressful,
FUN way, being surrounded by    and made aware of, phonemes..

Usborne (of course) has some great rhyming books. Needless to say, they have
them because they are so vitally important to learning phonemic awareness.

Usborne never does anything by accident or just to sell a book. There is always
a method to their madness. (I like this phrase-my mother always used it to defend
her artistic way of doing things)

Dr. Seuss books are also very good books. Get the simpler ones for early on,
saving the more complex until around 4 years and older. (you'll have to
practice reading them out loud ALONE first, or you will look like an
idiot stumbling around trying to pronouce most of the words-since
they are made-up words and usually quite convoluted)

However, this is well worth the effort since your child will love these stories
and want you to read them until they are 12 years old and sometimes even
older.
(Can't picture that punky little smart mouth down the street asking his
mom to read Dr. Seuss?- don't worry about it-it happens all the time-if reading
has been emphasised and used in a loving home to form bonds)

Kids who are read to daily by their parents, not only tend to be smarter and
learn easier, they also love to be read to long after they can read on their own.
Daily reading to your children from infancy on, will create a bond that no
amount of money, vacations, or family counseling can match.
(Daily reading
along with the committment to the practice of the
Family Table-a whole different topic-that I hope to cover later-
come as
close as any parent can get to having a written guarantee when it comes
to their child's success in school and in life)

Of course, you must NEVER ever turn this FUN, memory creating, bonding
time with Mom & Dad,  into a reading lesson or a pressure filled activity.

So, embrace the "phones" and make sure your child has strong "phone"  skills.

Phonics truly matters.
