Who Want To Raise Smarter Kids
Do you want smarter kids? Of course, you do! Who doesn't?
But, as a parent are you making it a priority to do all that you can to raise smarter kids and to make sure your child has what it takes to succeed in life?
Every parent wants their child to do well- to be a success at whatever their chosen path. Unfortunately, we all get busy with day to day life, and the things that we need to do to ensure a better future , often get put off until tomorrow. But, for many of those important things-does tomorrow ever come? According to research, not often enough.
Well, the good news is...
there is one sure fire thing that every parent can do, and if they commit to doing it and are consistant with it, they will be giving themselves and their family one of the best guarantees available for raising a smarter child. And this is in a world that comes with very few guarantees.
-
It is simple-yet requires committment.
-
It can be done by any parent regardless of racial, ethnic, religious or financial background.
-
And the best part is...It can be lots of FUN!!
Well, what is this wondrous thing? Is it a secret? Does it cost lots of money?
Will I have to name my first born child after you to find out??
...Ok, let's not get carried away here!
The answer is...tah dah!...Reading.
What? Reading?? That's what all this hoopla is about?
Yep.. That's what all this hoopla is about.
But why all the mystery and the big lead in for something that simple and so obvious?
Because sadly, very few parents truly realize just how empowering strong reading skills can be for their child.
Raising a reader is probably the only sure fire way to raise a smarter child.
Reading and reading comprehension (the ability to understand what you are reading) is THE key. Building strong reading skills should actually begin during the first year of your child's life and continue through the first decade.
Many parents do not understand this and think that teaching reading is some large formalized action that is best left to the "experts" at school. But, beginning early, with a few simple lifestyle changes, can make a huge difference in your child's future and whether that child struggles in school.
Research shows that the reading skills of a child is one of the most important indicators of a child's success in school and life beyond.
One report actually said that some states look at the readling levels of their 3rd graders to determine future correctional facility needs. Now, that does not mean that every low level reader or reluctant reader will wind up in prison, but it certainly tells us that a child who can not, will not, or does not read is at a disadvantage over those that do read, and read well.
Poor reading skills affect almost every subject that a child must tackle in school. Reading comprehension is needed in some way for every subject in school. A child who does not read well, and their cousin-"the reluctant reader", will just not have the tools they will need to do what it takes to actually learn those subjects.
We all know the downward spiral that a child begins, when school becomes tough. It is a sad thing to watch when the sweet child, with so much potential, begins to lose their sunny nature as they begin to dread school.
They begin to get into trouble during class for either not being prepared or for not paying attention, when in fact, they are actually feeling rather overwhelmed and maybe even like they are lost or drowning in confusion.
They begin to think less and less of him/herself as they struggle nightly to do homework, or to catch up on work that should have been done during the day.
And what a strain on Mom & Dad. The entire family suffers because so much time and energy is now tied up (usually for years) on just getting Johnny or Susie through each school year. I've seen it again and again, and it is heart breaking.
The great thing is -most of the above scenario can be prevented if the right steps are taken early on. Avoiding it requires some committment-but usually a lot less than would be needed to try to fix it once it happens.
First: You must stop saying- "That only happens to other people's kids", or "My kids are doing well, so that won't happen to us" because to tell you
the truth-
If you do not have a strong reader
who actually spends time reading
and your child turns out o.k-Statistics say that it was pure luck! Who wants to leave their child's future in the hands of Luck? Not me!
Second:You must committ to making whatever lifestyle changes necessary
to create an enriching reading enviroment for your children. This is not really as daunting (or dull) as it sounds.
